American women mayors back Kamala Harris in the race for the US Presidency

Michelle Wu (Boston), Kathy Sheehan (Albany) and Cherelle Parker (Philadelphia) are among the American mayors who are backing Kamala Harris for the US Presidency

July 2024: American Vice President Kamala Harris is strongly supported by US mayors, particularly women mayors, in her endeavour to succeed Joe Biden as President of the United States. Within a few days after she announced that she was seeking the nomination of the Democratic Party, some of the country’s most respected mayors endorsed Kamala Harris. The Democratic Mayors Association lists almost 300 mayors who have endorsed the Vice President. Women Mayors has heard from more than 80 US female mayors who have pledged their support for her. Among them are mayors from some of America’s biggest cities including Washington DC, San Francisco, Phoenix, Boston and Los Angeles but also mayors from countless smaller communities between California and New York Island.

Here is what they say:

Michelle Wu

Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts

“President Biden has given a lifetime of service to our country. I’m grateful for his unwavering dedication to the American people and the many ways in which he has delivered for the City of Boston and our families. Today he extends his legacy of toughness and patriotism, once again demonstrating the will to make challenging decisions in service to our nation.”

“Vice President Kamala Harris is the leader we need to meet this moment. With the Biden-Harris administration’s record of accomplishment and with the activism of communities across the country ready to fight for our brightest future, Democrats will win in November. I will do all I can to help.”

“I’m excited to organise and vote for Kamala Harris as our nominee at the Democratic National Convention in August and as President in November.”

Muriel Bowser

Mayor of Washington D.C.

“People often ask women running for office in ways they don’t ask men to prove themselves. I think women are underestimated, especially when they are running for the top job… to be chief executive.”

“Kamala Harris has supported statehood for the District of Columbia. The only way we won’t have this conversation election to election, generation to generation is if D.C. is finally a state and not at the whims of a Congress or autonomy threatened by a president.”

“Plus, former president Donald Trump continues to threaten to overhaul the federal workforce by replacing civil servants with political appointees.”

Kate Gallego

Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona

The 5 November election is a critical one - and we have a clear choice: revert to another disastrous Trump presidency and slide back from the progress we’ve made, or continue to build on the momentum and achievements of the last four years under the Biden-Harris Administration.”

“I choose the latter. The future I want for our country is one where seniors can enjoy low costs on their medications, where combatting climate change is an urgent priority, and where the American Dream is achievable for all families - not just the wealthy few.”

“That’s why I wholeheartedly support Kamala Harris, who I know will continue to deliver results for all of us, and stand ready to do whatever it takes to elect her to the White House.”

London Breed

Mayor of San Franciso, California

"We know the real Kamala Harris. It is our job to support and defend her record. It is our job to go out there and tell the story of the real Kamala Harris to voters in the swing states."

"She needs us to come together. We as Democrats, don't have time to waste. We don't have time to mess around and figure things out and to decide, well maybe this person, well maybe that person. Kamala Harris is the person."

Cherelle Parker

Mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

“Kamala Harris has succeeded in every aspect of her career in making sure that people come first. Her first campaign stop as Vice Presidential nominee in 2020 was not at a swanky location but at a neighbourhood where struggling working people lived.

Jane Castor

Mayor of Tampa, Florida

“The stakes couldn’t be higher in this upcoming election and I’m excited to endorse Kamala Harris. The Biden-Harris Administration has delivered on major Tampa infrastructure projects and I know that will continue in a Harris Administration. Vice President Harris will put our community first”

Lauren McLean

Mayor of Boise, Idaho

“Facing one of the most consequential elections of our lifetimes, millions of us are fired up, ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work for an incredible (and history-making) candidate. The energy and momentum of the past 24 hours are inspiring!”

Tishaura Jones

Mayor of St Louis, Missouri

“The Biden-Harris administration delivered tangible results for city residents, including the American Rescue Plan Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. I therefore support Kamala Harris for the Democratic Party nomination and the next US President.”

Megan Barry

Former Mayor of Nashville, Tennessee

“President Biden’s decision to gracefully withdraw showcases his character and dedication to our nation’s future over personal ambition. We are presented with the opportunity to build on the progress we have made during President Biden’s time in office, but we also face the profound risk of regressing to the politics of division and extremism that a second Trump presidency would bring.”

Becky Daggett

Mayor of Flagstaff, Arizona

“Flagstaff and Coconino County have greatly benefitted from the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, a signature piece of legislation championed by the Biden-Harris administration. The law pumped millions into transportation upgrades and pedestrian safety in the downtown area and nearly $16 million in post-wildfire flood mitigation on the San Francisco Peaks and Flagstaff.

“Regardless of where your interest lies as a resident of northern Arizona, the vice president has been a part of delivering this much-needed money to help us complete these projects - and not only in Flagstaff, which we’ve been huge recipients but also for our tribal neighbours.”

Sharon Weston Broome

Mayor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

“As a longtime champion of Kamala Harris and her accomplishments, I'm grateful that Louisiana's Democratic delegation quickly came together to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee for President.”

Satya Rhodes-Conway

Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin

“I’m with Kamala Harris.”

Kathy Sheehan

Mayor of Albany, New York

“We need to unite behind Kamala Harris. I think that we need to move quickly to answer the American people as to who the Democratic candidate is.

“This is a really important election. Democracy is on the line. The future and direction of this country are on the line, but we don’t have a tremendous amount of time. We have to move forward quickly, and I hope to move forward quickly.”

Lori Lightfoot

Former Mayor of Chicago

“I can be counted among those who have made up their minds about the presidential race. I look forward to supporting Kamala Harris’ presidential race.”

“This has been a very tough period for all of us. I said a prayer last night for President Biden and his family. I thanked him for putting the country and the party ahead of myself,

"There's a level of enthusiasm out there that I have in myself that I'm seeing in other people. So I slept pretty well last night, but the challenge is right in front of us, and a lot of work to do."
